Hilarious and tragic take down of the 1930s French Bourgeoisie. I didn’t expect to like this as much as I did but it was layered and surprisingly bold (especially for a film that was released in 1939). It became clearer as the movie went on why it caused such an uproar upon release.

Fascinating, slow burn character study that is equal parts comforting and unnerving. It’s very human in that it’s full of longing and contradictions (connection/disconnection, control/no control, etc). The running time is long but it’s purposeful and allows you to feel closer to the protagonist.

This is my second Resnais film after Hiroshima Mon Amour. Tragic, disorienting, and beautifully shot. The fragmented editing might be off putting for some but it is largely effective in portraying the impact that trauma (particularly war and grief) has on memory. Still need to see Marienbad.

Making tavern style/Chicago thin crust tomorrow night. Following the Kenji López-Alt recipe. Leaving it out on parchment over night allows the crust to get crispier and it’s easier to move in and out of the oven. Will post follow up pics tomorrow. 🍕
