How an Alexandria church is responding after backlash over Charlie Kirk comments A church in Alexandria was thrust into national headlines following a sermon addressing the death of conservative activist Charlie Kirk. The senior pastor at Alfred Street Baptist Church – Rev. Howard-John Wesley – delivered a sermon Sept. 14, which discussed several hot topic issues in the country, including Kirk’s assassination, which happened just days earlier. “Charlie Kirk did not deserve to be assassinated,” he said. “But I’m overwhelmed seeing the flags of the United States of America at half staff calling this nation to honor and venerate a man who was an unapologetic racist and spent all of his life sowing seeds of division and hate into this land.” The church posts its services online. “I am sorry, but there’s nowhere in the bible where we are taught to honor evil, and how you die does not redeem how you lived,” Wesley said in the sermon. Wesley’s comments. garnered tens of thousands of views,sparking some backlash. Alfred Street Baptist staff sent out a message to members ahead of this Sunday’s service warning there could be protestors outside the church, according to posts made on social media. News4 didn’t see any protestors while we were there but did see Alexandria police. The officers said they are there every week. News4 reached out to Alfred Baptist for comment on the recent attention and criticism the church has received and was told church leaders have no comment at this time. However, during this sunday’s service, wesley did say this: “It’s been a different kind of week. I want to thank you all for praying. For remaining peaceful. For realizing we’ve turned down all the media requests because we don’t engage in soundbites.
