Pretty solid evening as a carto-parent! Overheard the 5 year old making maps for a while (FYI fellow cartographers, apparently the rule is that maps cannot use colors besides blue and green), and then one of the bedtime "books" with the 3 year old was a map of Spain in a guidebook.

Guess Iâm not a Travel Guy but I did not realize that I could flyâin the sky! an affront to god!âfrom Boston to Chicago, then back again, and then make a second round trip, for about the same price as having a decent bed to sleep in for one (1) night in Chicago.

From our relentless book promo email campaign, I'm glad that one of the bites was by
@clovettboston.bsky.social
! It was fun to talk, and I really enjoyed the article that is about, yes, my maps, but amid greater context and musings on Boston geography and history.

I guess I need to learn how to pronounce Mattapan. I frequently see/hear MATTapan (emphasis on the first syllable) but often enoughâand somewhat consistently from old-timers from its Jewish daysâMattaPAN. What are the locals saying?

Sorry, here I am with more Boston in 50 Maps promo! This was a simple map, but nevertheless it was one of my favorites: a map of the places and events in Make Way For Ducklings. The story seems to take place in a Boston that always was and always will be, so it just seemed like an essential map.

It's still weird to me (from Ohio) that every school here (New England) has a week off in the middle of February, and now that it's Something I Have to Deal With as a parent, it's super rude that a crippling east coast blizzard is scheduled to make the school break even longer.

It's not really feasible for me to participate in things like Defeat ICE by Taking a Three Day Weekend or whatever. Usually more than time or effort, the thing I'm able to give to a cause is money. Are there organizations to which I can donate that, in any small way, might help stop this shit?

The impending winter storm is so massive that it will wreak havoc on the geographical fabric of the USA. Youâre gonna have Big Great Lakes and Little Great Lakes. States within states. Vast regions will shrink and vanish. Grab a shovel! (Source: đ¤ˇââď¸ via some page that Facebook wanted to show me)

Labeling maps is a peaceful practice, and often is half the job of a cartographer. I'm sure seas will be drained and skies will be blackened so that AI can do it in our stead in a year or two, but for now, I always enjoy looking at a "map minus map" version of completed work.

Alright cartografriends, I have a maps book from
