The following algorithm written in #6502assembly checks whether ASCII character loaded in the 8-bit accumulator is a hexadecimal digit ('0'-'9', 'A'-'F'). In case it is a hexadecimal digit, the corresponding value from 0000 to 1111 is stored in the low nibble of the accumulator.

Now, re-enabled the X orbit for a full test..... A bit tricky in places, and there's a bit of PANIC there, but easy to evade the DUCK when you get the hang of it....... Plus I've build in options to speed up DUCK Y homing reaction / X orbit speed as difficulty progresses ! THIS WILL DO, ME ! 😲

Today we have a classic scroller on the BBC Micro with a slight twist... custom font scaled dynamically to 16x16 pixels and continuous gradient applied to give the impression of more colours than supported by Mode 5. All software scrolling (no CRTC abuse) so works on the Acorn Electron too. 🔊

More 6845 CRTC experimentation on the BBC Micro. This time it's Mode 1 and an infinite vertical scroller. I'm probably not doing this right as it's not as smooth as I would expect. Need to do some more reading on this one. No music with this demo. #bbcmicro #demoscene

Ooh, found a new bug ! While on a ladder, Harry can jump straight up, fall off the bottom of the ladder and plummet to his death. That's fine, just a sprite bodge left on the screen as he does so. It's the only time Harry actually 'moves', I've forgotten to adjust part of the Harry plot proc !

So, having the control set option on the instructions page is fine, would help if I reflected the choice within the game scroller ! 😅 This was more of a pig, as a lot of the scroller text is pre-compressed, so couldn't patch it after loading. A lot of data rejigging, but it's all done ! 🙄

Some beta testing on a new eagerly awaited Elk game this morning and this afternoon spending some time on Astoraid. Play area is 64 x 64 sectors containing 32 asteroids, but you don't know where they are to start with. The "scan" screen lets you find them :) Asteroids contain different things...

Feel I'm getting a fairly solid version of #bomberman in place for my next #picotron project. CPU players are something I'll worry about later on. Want to get the single player and co-op basics in place first. #gamedev #retrogaming

Just found this on a random USB stick.... I guess I was pondering this while doing 'Fortress' for the Acorn Electron (which I shall return to and finish one day), as it could use a lot of the same procedures. Mode 1 with palette change halfway down the screen, changing red to green !

Talking of Acorn Electron Fortress, this is how far I've got with it.... slightly stalled due to stable framerate issues (and Chuckulus !).... plotting that giant wall causes the poor old Elk some problems now and again !

Another day, another level designed ! Splatted that keyboard bug (which wasn't - just an issue with the Harry movement logic), plus a few other things I wasn't happy with / hadn't noticed before ! The list of 'things to do' is very short...... at the moment ! 😱

Another thing of the list: in-game text 'bubbles' The 'GO!' bubble is a sprite, as it rises up the screen at start of play The others are 'simply' plotted text (inverted colours) and then some calculations to plot the bubbles around it 🤯 - not enough memory left for all 4 of these to be sprites!

Level 5 done - this highlighted a certain key combination that caused problems in the past (a kind of key clash thing)..... now the bugs mutated into a 'loop until you stop pressing these keys' feature ! Should be easy to find and fix - bit weird though !

Another level in the bag - looks easier than it is! Trying to address the difficulty progression - which actually has the DUCK introduced earlier than level 9! Level: 1 - Easy, a few hens 2 - Harder, a few hens 3 - Easy, DUCK only 4 - Harder, hens and lift 5 - Hard, hens 6 - Hard, DUCK only etc...
