I have an enduring affection for the John Wick franchise. The first movie was a straight-ahead, though stylish, revenge movie. And then by the 3rd, he’s using Russian orthodox iconography to escape to Morocco. Just amazing. By the 5th movie, John Wick should be in space fighting ninjas on a horse.

Three classes down: two boisterous and engaged; one attentive and quiet. Going to take the whole dog and pony show to bring them out of their shells, but there is pedagogical value to sharing in class. So it's worth the effort. Feeling so far optimistic about SP26.

I'm about to go teach my first classes for the semester. I thought I might share what I consider to be a crucial first-day activity: getting the names right. Knowing your students' names is a crucial part (hopefully) of anyone's pedagogy, from taking attendance to building community.

I was lurking in this exchange between Ted, @cblevins.bsky.social and @grimalkina.bsky.social, and I think the answer to Ted’s question centers on assessment. Low tech solutions like paper exams and oral presentations are good bandaids, I think the very core of assessments needs revision.

If I were at OU, I would want to know how the admin defines “impermissible evaluative standards.” It seems to suggest that faculty can teach what and how they want within a set of permissible specifications.

Has anyone published with MDPI? They cold emailed me to review a manuscript with a two week turnaround time, and they are offering discounted submission costs as compensation. A quick google search shows that they were considered predatory at one time, but maybe not anymore.

This is understandably concerning, especially for my tenure-track folks. But...I've never had anything but a 3-3 load while FT. And even that is increasingly a rarity among lectureships. This could be a wedge in faculty solidarity, because this is really only a problem for tenure-track folks.
