Remember when I said, “There are actual crimes against humanity going on”? Russia murdering Olena Kohut and many others would be one. Atrocities like this (whether they involve killing organists or not) really put things in perspective. Condolences to Olena’s family and all those impacted.

Olena Kohut performed on stage just days before Russia killed her. She was a solo organist and pianist at the Sumy National Theater. Olena also taught at the Professional College of Arts and Culture. On 13 April, a Russian missile strike on the city center of Sumy claimed 32 lives. ⤵️

There are plenty of actual crimes against humanity going on, but the Brewers getting rid of the organ and organist Dean Rosko is disappointing and sad. As the story below mentions, turns out they didn’t have it or him last season, either. Dean had played the organ at Brewers games for 20 years.

Very sad to hear of Nancy Bea Hefley’s passing. She succeeded Helen Dell as the Dodgers’ organist in 1988 and retired from the role at the end of the 2015 season. 💙

Retiring Blackhawks organist Frank Pellico gets emotional during a first-period ovation.

Tonight is truly the end of an era, as legendary Blackhawks organist Frank Pellico will work his final game. He has played at Blackhawks games for over 33 seasons, beginning at Chicago Stadium in 1991. Carrie Marcotte has split games with Frank since 2018-19. She’ll take the reins after tonight.

Going to try to unpack some Garth Hudson feelings because this is a particularly tough loss for me, as I’m sure it is for all organists, keyboard players, musicians, and music lovers.
