Bad news: we got a better look at what's hiding in the drop ceiling and our scope of work got bigger. Drop ceiling has to come down. Entire ceiling will need to be replaced. Water mitigation has to be hired. Need to figure out who to call to deal with the fireplace/chimney.

So the mystery has been solved. Turns out our old house has a fireplace in the wall on the second floor. Water has gotten inside of it and has leaked down into the floor/ceiling which is causing the Dark Water Starring Jennifer Connelly issue that we are having.
