Before 2022 we hadn't seen Willow Emerald Damselflies at Wildern. That year one or two were spotted and, by 2025, they are firmly established, especially at Coltsfoot Pond. These 5 are from 29/9 and include 2 oviposting pairs

This autumn, please consider leaving dead plants in your garden rather than 'tidying' them up. Over the winter they will provide sheltered spots for hibernating ladybirds and lots of other creatures π

Common Sexton Beetles are normally found on dead animals. This one, from 18/9, was found next to a dead hedgehog. It's was covered in mites, probably Poecilochirus carabi, a new species for Wildern

Small gardens can boost biodiversity just as much as big ones. And when joined together, tiny nature-friendly spaces create wildlife corridors that can benefit hedgehogs and all sorts of other wildlife! Ideas for small gardens:

To help insects this autumn, let native plants grow in a wild corner. Teasels, dandelions, dead nettles and hemp-agrimony all flower into autumn, providing nectar for butterflies and bumblebees. More autumn plants for pollinators:
