i started really playing rpgs as a teenager in about 2005. it didn't used to be like this.

the D&D 5e fandom and lifestyle brand is a separate hobby to the ttrpg scene, with much less overlap between the two demographics than most people expect.

One of the fascinating elements to me is the difference between pbta games and groups who hold firm to the idea that the only moves to exist are the moves explicitly provided by the text to the categories allotted those moves, and the ones that are open to bespoke moves in the framing idiom.

to my mind, the core of pbta is not "2d6+stat with mixed successes", it's the system of "when x trigger happens in the fiction, apply y specific mechanic". Codified, genre specific moves are its main innovation. If you think pbta is just 2d6+stat with varied levels of success, you missed the point

there is, lets be fair, only one way for your beliefs to align with objective reality, but lots of ways to be screamingly wrong

D&D is basically Content. Once upon a time it wasn't, as much bullshit as there's been in its history it was at one point a thing for sickos, but these days D&D lives firmly in the realm of Content. It's a Brand, it's a Lifestyle, art is entirely incidental to this and likely considered undesirable
