Monetary design is something that we're used to thinking of as something done by technocrats, not regular people. But just as centuries ago, government rules were made by fiat and now they are decided by representatives, so too with the design of monetary systems can we democratize the whats + hows.

We mistake design for inevitability due to what Jakob Feinig calls ‘monetary silencing’. ‘Silencing processes discourage questions like “Who ought to make currency, and according to what rules?” When silencing is successful, monetary design and its stakes disappear from view’.

Exactly. The power to create money is delegated to banks but not other public authorities, not because these are inescapable facts of life but because they are aspects of the current institutional and systemic design. We could decide, democratically, to design things differently if we chose.

VERY grateful for your work in articulating what a different financial system could look like. The lack of imagination to solve this problem (& the laziness to even just check how other countries do it...) in Westminster is astonishing.

Today in #DemocraticPublicFinance Mamdani in his speech challenged the casual narrative erasure of many in his coalition. Narrative erasure is the first step of an accounting trick: if someone can be said to not really exist, then their existence presents as a cost to the city that excludes them.

From monetary silencing to the politics of receivability, new stories of abundance & bonds becoming cash. These are practical questions, not obscure theories: Who gets to create money? Which institutions accept which forms of credit? How do we expand democratic participation in monetary design?

These aren’t utopian fantasies—they’re real tools for expanding democratic control over credit and bypassing manufactured scarcity. Much of our recent work has been about how complementary currencies help us see money itself as an open, contested choreography we can reshape together.

I enjoyed this too! Thx to @chrisb2024.bsky.social for inviting us and hosting. We talked about how “Unis” help students understand money as social technology; how campaign credits (see the Zetro card) can mobilise volunteer labour; and municipal bonds can become “cash” when politics makes it so.

3/ Democratic Public Finance reframes money as credit—a public institution we design. Money is the process of recognising the contributions that matter to the community. Together, we can reorganise our monetary systems to serve people and planet, not financial markets and tech billionaires.

2/ The dominant political worldview today treats money as scarce and private. This makes politics a zero-sum game and gives bondholders veto power over democracy. It blocks us from organising our resources and people to meet community needs.
