thecontrapuntal on Instagram: "At Contrapuntal we are excited to announce the forthcoming start of the project, Post-Panoptics: Embodied Surveillance and the Arch…" At Contrapuntal we are excited to announce the forthcoming start of the project, Post-Panoptics: Embodied Surveillance and the Architectures of Control, and would like to thank @cultuurfonds (and Canan Marasligil) for their support!In academia, in discourse, in prison studies, in surveillance studies, in bits about intellectualizing reality TV shows, in commentaries about the retrenchment of the state that “leaves” but never stops watching – the panopticon has been built and rebuilt many times, but it stands the test of time in historicizing and visualizing the state of surveillance we live in in the age of late stage capitalism. The Panopticon looms, but it is not enough. We are being watched in unsettling ways that we are aware of. We are being looked at in ways that are worse than we know, and we do not want to acknowledge. Today, in extreme cases, technology being employed for surveillance has developed a mind of its own—algorithms and automated decision systems reproduce discriminating biases even with safeguards and without direct human input, automatically reinforcing existing structures of oppression. In an attempt to undo the anxieties of embodying surveillance, through this project we hope to invite contemporary narratives that challenge and question the structures of power and control that enable mass surveillance.
