Probably autistic. Tabletop & computer gaming. RPGs & game design. Comics.
I'm pretty sure cats aren't autistic, but we react to the same stimuli at home in much the same way, so I'm empathetic.

A whole mess of new music for me to listen too this week. I cannot understate the importance of dsicovering new art as one ages. It's so easy to settle into the comfortable nostagia of our youth and never listen to something new (to us).

Fire Force (anime) just took their longest running embarrassment and turned it into a key plot element in a way that was not cheesy, lazy, or nonsensical. They did it in a single episode in the just before the climax of the final arc. I am mad about it and very, very impressed.

5E DMs. Gotta an edge case for you to chew on. A PC casts Faerie Fire on a Displacer Beast. Do the PCs roll to hit with Advantage? RAW as written say no. I say yes. (I promise, this is not fishing for leverage against my DM. I think it's a genuinely good question.)

Shifting perspective from "Every Tool is a Hammer" to "Every hammer is a Tool" is an important milestone in learning the craft of running/designing RPGs. The key is intent. The goal is reflex - automatically reaching for the correct tool to create the affect you want in the moment.

Ok, I have gotten a bunch of followers of the last few weeks, so a quick intro. Hi! I'm Quinn, and I am a "full stack" game nerd. I love playing, discussing, and designing TTRPGs. I have won zero awards, but I make dope games. I am, as
@davethegame.bsky.social
puts it, an "idea firehose".

Man, I love the "what if the Hulk was Korean?" question because the hulk is a fun way to see how other cultures view anger and an individual's relationship with it. Also, different variations on ripped up pants.

You know what would slap? The Muppet Show in VR. Put me in the theater seats as a random Muppet. No need to let me wander the sets. Just put on a show. But if you do let me wander the sets, it should look like a set. Show me cameras and a puppeteer underneath me.

I have a handful of Palladium games on my shelf. Mostly Robotech & Macross, but this one too (Ninjas & Superspies). I never really settled into the system and had the books for the flavor. It would be interesting to see how they read with 20+ years of experience under my belt.

D&D night! I'm not feeling up to it now, but I know I'm 80% likely to feel better if I go. I just have to bring my ear protection because my tolerance or noise is limited to day. Also, I get to eat out on D&D night. I think I want some good Chinese food tonight. That's usually a big plus.

This requires a longer bit of writing to really explore, but in our society we talk about “the dignity of work”, and that’s a mistake. People, I think, don’t emotionally crave *work*, they crave to *make*. To make a change in the working some individually pleasing way, physical, emotional, social.

In a weird headspace tonight, but it's a familiar one. I'm feeling stressed. There's not a lot of time to decompress and nothing that normally brings me joy feels like an option. If I hadn't eaten, I would go to a restaurant, if I only to change the nature of my discomfort, and to change scenery.

Getting a new phone or tablet is always a great opportunity to start fresh. I sync files, but not apps. I download and configure it all fresh. That takes time, but I feel better because I end up with fewer apps and I get a fresh look at new features/settings.

/5 If you ever doubt human kindness, or mercy, or the redeeming power of love, watch a spouse or child or friend come into the room during a Zoom D&D session and pretend it’s all totally cool and normal even if they’re not into it. It’s very sweet.

. I'm torn. I don't think he's a great card or fun to play against, but I love the thematic play. I think it takes a little too much dedication to pull off though. I wish they overhauled him like they did Thanos.

I got to experience two distinct sides of comic book fandom tonight in an extended conversation about comics and movies after tonight's online D&D game. (This is a new game that I just joined.) It had ups and downs, but I'm calling it a win!

Tina got a new bluetooth keyboard with an interesting flaw, it dupes letters and whole words when she's writing with it. At least, it does when she uses it with her Android tablet. It has a wired option.. same result. I'm posting this to test from a Windows PC and I'm not having the same issue.

I will say, Ting Mobile was very, very quick on converting my SIM number to an e-SIM number and getting the new phone set up. I just have to manage two work related auth apps and then I'll be all set up. Well.. those and the new phone cover arrives on Monday.

I get a new phone delivered today! It's sooner than I planned, but the news that the RAM shortages driven by AI are about to hit consumer electronics like phones and TVs caught me in a bad moment and spooked me. It isn't all bad. I have a 4-year old phone and we know someone who can use it.

All the D&D talk lately has me sketching out thoughts on how skills have progressed across the edition. I think 5E ended up landed more or less where 2E did in terms of simplicity, but with clearer design language and intent. I only ever had the 2E PHB. Now I kinda wish I had the DMG too.

How do you fight that becoming irrelevant as an ageing white male? 1) Stop saying the next generations suck. 2) Learn from them, accept them. 3) Acknowledge your privilege and your blind spots 4) Earn the trust of others. 5) Become a wizard by turning your experience into magic for others.

Heck yeah, I'ld support AOC to take over Schumer's Senate seat or make a run for President. But I worry about who replaces her in the House. I worry that the work she does to support and engage her district won't scale to those larger offices. We need that work... that example.

I'm seeing D&D 4E in the discourse again. 4E was my favorite edition to DM. Monster and encounter design was finally clicking for me. The Rules Compendium was an incredible reference. Cheap cardboard tokens for monsters, if I wanted to play with a map.
