The first version of this poem was written in the early 2000s as I watched a "Secrets of the Dead" marathon that aired on PBS during one of their pledge drives. It's been extensively revised since then, but some of the bits I nicked from those episodes still remain.

I was raised Roman Catholic. The church in my hometown had a large sculpture above the altar that presented a mostly nude Jesus on a cross. And while I never found that presentation attractive; it was, depending on my mood, an amusing/annoying reminder that I DID find men attractive.
