Working on research of direct relevance to this - police responses to JSO slow marches both sides of the Regs Suella Braverman introduced in 2023 that unlawfully brought in a similar power. It would be the largest expansion in general assembly/procession regulation since 1986. #protest #law

This is hilarious but also underlines the danger of a strict liability offence where the police only have to prove that your slogan gives rise to a reasonable suspicion that you support a proscribed organisation.

Arrests in Norwich today for expressing support for PA. Interesting that the police quoted the reasons for intervening from the Public Order Act 1986. They have nothing to do with the powers in the Terrorism Act 2000 which were used to arrest the protesters. Link to article in post below.

The damage that the proscription of Palestine Action (and undoubtedly some of the policing of this law) is doing to police legitimacy in this country is an unfolding nightmare.

With all the discourse about the term Terrorism and its application, found this nugget at Bishopsgate library last week. It's in reference to a violent clash between the Met and a group of around 20,000 protesters in Trafalgar Square in 1887, labelled Bloody Sunday at the time.

One of my legal blog posts got a chatgpt hit today. First time that has happened. Cant help but wonder what purpose the user had and whether Chatgpt provided an accurate protrayal of what I had written.

Interesting that they were arrested under s.13 rather than s.12, and shows the considerable potential overlap between them. One has a max sentence of 14 years, the other 6 months. I wonder if that factored into the power used.

If true that PA have dissolved, it now appears to be an offence to show support for the memory of an organisation which no longer exists, but at the time it existed, wasn't proscribed.

The judgment re the interim relief made very clear that it was not the views and/or tactics that were prosribed but the organisation of PA.

Many people have posted support for Palestine Action recently, if they leave those posts up after proscription is it considered an implied/ongoing expression of support under s.12 TA 2000? Will everyone have to delete those posts before midnight to avoid possible prosecution?

With the emergence of the group calling themselves Yvette Cooper, it does call into question whether proscribing a group such as PA can achieve whatever aims the Gov wishes when the group could just reform under another name. Would we then see an endless cycle of proscription and rebrand?

The proscription of PA will likely leach well beyond the group itself. Other protest groups may be labelled terrorist sympathisers, particularly groups associated with the Gaza conflict like Palestine Solidarity Campaign. Might that impact how those groups are responded to? 🤷‍♂️
