🚨We FOI’d every Scottish council to find out how many teachers are on supply contracts. Here’s what we found: 2017: 6,052 2018: 6,563 2019: 6,648 2020: 7,137 2021: 8,800 2022: 10,583 2023: 11,027 2024: 11,145 That’s an 84% rise since 2017.

In December 2024, the Scottish Government announced millions in extra funding to protect teacher numbers. But East Dunbartonshire Council admits no detailed planning has been done on how it will be spent. There are only 7 weeks left in the school year. When will the planning start?

Thank you to Go Radio for speaking with one of our teachers today about a recent survey we released which shows a majority of the public have seen an impact to our children’s educations through job instability.

🚨We asked over 1,500 people across Scotland what they really think about teacher job insecurity🚨 The results? Unignorable.

We asked 1,500+ people across Scotland about unstable teaching contracts. The results: 🔍 96% aware 🙋‍♀️ 94% know affected teachers 🏫 89% say not enough permanent staff 🔁 84% see high turnover 📉 97% say pupils are impacted #STfP #EducationCrisis

This is particularly difficult for neurodivergent children. Consistency of approach is rule number 1. The frequent changes to staff negatively impact on the child’s development and ability to trust adults. School environments need stability and teachers are most important part of that stability.

As someone currently in this position, I wasn’t told I couldn’t stay at my school until the very day schools closed for Easter. It’s utterly heartbreaking—for me, and for the pupils I teach. We build strong, trusting relationships, only to be pulled away with no warning.

This note was written by a pupil, worried their teacher wouldn’t be back after summer. They were right. Due to a lack of permanent jobs—and councils’ reliance on casual supply staff and fixed-term contracts—this teacher, like many others, had to leave. It’s devastating for pupils.

Yesterday, Jenny Gilruth said in parliament that supply was a choice for many teachers in Scotland. Today, we asked 787 supply teachers if this was true. 97% of them told us that they rather not be on supply.

1/ Last week, we met with Jenny Gilruth and senior government representatives to discuss the ongoing teacher employment crisis. The meeting was informal but constructive, with the Cabinet Secretary appearing receptive to our concerns and ideas.

A blatant disregard for people who have studied for years then went through a probation year. Not to mention existing staff and pupils. This a national scandal.

East Lothian Council confirmed they’ve only had ‘one informal brief discussion/meeting’ with the Scottish Government about teacher numbers since 2022, with ‘no minutes or notes’ taken. They also state workforce planning discussions ‘are not routinely held’ with the Scottish Government or COSLA.

As a parent group for children with additional support needs we fully support your campaign and hope that your all soon in a classroom where you belong helping the kids.

As a result of the current climate teachers in their masses are now being forced into claiming Universal Credit due to the lack of stable opportunities., We are advocating for a more stable teaching workforce, ultimately improving the quality of education for Scotland’s students.
