Bourbon Brotherhood

George Garvin Brown was born this day in 1846. In 1870, he created Old Forester, the first bottled bourbon. The Brown family continues to be one of the top producers of bourbon. Each year Brown-Forman releases a new batch of "Birthday Bourbon" to celebrate the its founder.

One of my favorite things to do with a new whiskey is to add a drop of water to see how it changes the smell and taste. How much are we changing it though? Time for some

In 2020, I got drawn in lotteries to buy a William Larue Weller, Four Roses Limited Edition, and a Birthday Bourbon in about an 8-week span. I think I used up all my bourbon luck that year 😅

Best way to do a tasting is with friends! Glad I have a neighbor that does these with me. This tasting was all about Penelope - only two samples this time, but a good brand for sure! I’ll definitely consider more of their products after this.

post is all about the COLOR of bourbon (and other whiskeys too, I guess 😉) Bourbon gets its color from the barrel during aging. But WHAT is it, exactly, that imparts that heavenly amber hue? 🥃 I was curious, so I went and dug for the answer. Time for a 🧵

Anyone got a good picture of bourbon being dumped out of the barrel, or someone filling a glass with a thief? I’m working on a thread and I’d rather use a good photo and attribute it than try to use AI or a stock photo somewhere.

The Kentucky Artisan Tasting Lounge was a total blast. Marshall and Alexis were so much fun to talk with! Marshall gave me some great insight to the “mad scientist” feel of distilling - I think I’m gonna have to go back soon to talk more with him. Definite recommend for bourbon trail trips!

Sounds intriguing! It’s tough for me to buy an unknown bottle at $70+ but backstories like this help a little. I really wish brands like this would do 375s more often as a way to encourage people to give their product a shot at a lower cost!

One downside to spending so much time learning to describe flavors in whiskey is picking up weird notes in your food and drink that you can’t ignore Today’s casualty: My cold brew has a prominent note of celery root I can’t untaste it 😩
