In Chicago we have alders that represent 50 different community areas. I went to my Alderwoman’s office this morning to ask about her silence on the ICE activity in our ward. After a poor exchange I wanted to share the follow-up letter I sent:

This is the biggest attack on free speech since the McCarthy era but it also has significantly less popular consensus behind it than the second Red Scare. It's being done on behalf of a minority faction led by the most unpopular president in modern history. Organizing against this can win.

In Chicago, public roads are used to store private vehicles en masse—sometimes even for free. And yet my local bike lane has oil stains from the cars that regularly use it as overflow parking.

Public parks are for all—housed and unhoused. But also when a park turns into an housing encampment, the park is no longer for all. It’s ok to balance that complexity.

When I see people online, even in jest, suggest that people living in Republican-controlled states should be abandoned because of their politicians, I feel a deep heartache. New York CREATED Donald Trump and none of y’all are ever talk about it the way you disparage Alabama or Mississippi.
