This is a common challenge for megaprojects in today’s political environment. Almost by definition they take longer than single political terms but ongoing support is uncertain at best leading to much more complex decisions on how and what to advance.

This is my two worlds colliding. Drastic cuts in transit mean more kids missing/late to school. Attendance is hugely important for learning and kids who miss school fall further and further behind as time goes on. Very sad to see on all sides - fund transit, help kids learn! 🚍🚎🚇🎓🏫🧑🏼‍🏫

Congestion pricing in NYC is a huge win all around. Traffic is down, collisions between cars and pedestrians are down, emissions are down, noise is down, transit ridership and funding are up. Seems like a pretty remarkable set of outcomes from just not giving away valuable road space for free.

What an amazing result. In 2010 I was working for the MPO in Philadelphia and we were working with the city to make the economic/financial case for LED lights (lower energy use paying for implementation) but I had no idea it could also reduce crime. Amazing!

The more things change the more they stay the same - in 2008 Proposition 1A passed 53-47 approving the state building an HSR line. A poll now finds support for continuing to use state funds for HSR at 54-46. You can say whatever else but Californians still want an HSR system.

Please read this whole thing as one small example of the basic cruelty involved here and note that this is happening to American federal employees. Imagine the cruelty toward those who USAID and other parts of the US government are actually helping.😔

Some personal news: last night I was sworn in as a Trustee for the San Carlos School District. So you may now see both transportation and education/school posts going forward.

Congestion pricing for a place like Manhattan is a clear winner for people taking transit, people driving, and the environment. If you need to drive, you still can, and you might save some time when you do. Meanwhile, critical investment is happening that will improve transit for all riders.

This is truly remarkable. A tremendous drop in pollution from giving people better transportation options and ways to get around. @annehidalgo.bsky.social deserves a huge amount of credit for bold political leadership and ability to deliver a better future for people.
