Following preparations for the military operation against civilians, the army moved into Beijing from all directions on 3 June 1989. The news spread quickly and the people of Beijing gathered in the streets of their city and erected barricades.

On 2 June 1989, hundreds of thousands of people gathered once again in Tiananmen Square, ignoring the martial law that had been declared, whilst the military took up positions in preparation for the clearance operation. On the same day, Deng Xiaoping also gave his approval for the use of force.

On 1/06/1989, the leadership of the CCP decided to clear Tiananmen Square. In doing so, it legitimised the use of force by soldiers who had already been brought in from afar. Many of the people gathered around the Goddess of Democracy and Freedom had no idea that they had only two days left to live.

Comparing the devastating 1877 El Niño that killed millions with where we’re headed in 2026 is like comparing 2 different planets. We should be worried. But we should also be furious. Decades & decades have been squandered, & now we’re on track to lose everything.

On 19 May 1989, the number of demonstrators in Tiananmen Square reached 1.2 million. Party leader Zhao Ziyang, who was probably already aware of Deng Xiaoping’s plans, addressed the demonstrators and tried to persuade them to call off the protests. That same day, Premier Li Peng imposed martial law.

Even 37 years after the killing of thousands of demonstrators in Beijing and other cities in June 1989, the Party still fears being held to account for its actions. In Hong Kong, public memory of the events persisted until 2019.

As dialogue failed to materialise and the state-run press described the protesters as rioters incited by a small minority, around 160 students resorted to the ultimate form of peaceful protest on 13 May and went on hunger strike. Their actions attracted an ever-growing number of supporters.

Writers and artists were also involved in the 1989 Tiananmen Square protests. Despite all attempts to silence them, they set out their memories in essays and films. Among them was my favourite Chinese author: Yu Hua 余華.

Whilst the party was engaged in internal disputes over the threat posed by the growing demonstrations, the base of participants among Beijing’s population expanded considerably. In May 1989, local police officers and military personnel began to join the students and workers in increasing numbers.

News of the Beijing protests spread rapidly, and reform-minded people in other cities also began to voice their discontent. Unfortunately, there was generally no Western press present there. The Goddess of Democracy and Freedom in Tiananmen Square marked a peak in the protests on 30 May 1989.

The demonstrators in Beijing reflected the desire for change that was sweeping through society. Their attempt to present a petition to the then Premier Li Peng on 22/04/1989 was rejected. In the person of Zhao Ziyang, General Secretary of the CPC, the protesters also found an advocate for dialogue.

The 1980s saw a flourishing of public debate in China. Following the death of Hu Yaobang (15/04/1989), students in particular began to gather in Tiananmen Square. Their protest was directed primarily against the Communist Party’s incompetent fiscal policy and the rampant corruption among the cadres

I think Peter Magyar’s campaign in Hungary deserves to be scrutinised by the Dems. He wasn’t afraid to speak directly to the other party’s supporters on the ground and mobilised support via social media, given that 80% of Hungary’s media is controlled by the state or Trump’s associates.
