Something that doesn't get discussed enough is how seeing millions of White folks participate in the George Floyd protests in the summer and autumn of 2020 freaked White supremacists out and animated them.

From my book on how bigotry works- The useful idiot has to believe that they are the exception to the bigotry they are directing at their group and that the bigots won't turn on them once they are no longer useful... aka: "the face eating leopard won't eat MY face."

I always want critical feedback because i want to improve my craft.

It is critical that people hold activist movements accountable for their failures and damage they do to the causes they claim to support for exactly the reasons that they hold politicians accountable. Bad activism and bad political representation cause harm to the folks they speak for.

If you think of replacement theory as a political ideology that creates policy, law, and political identity, a lot of what you're seeing and hearing in the discourse becomes intelligible and terrifying. Bigotry always tells on itself, y'all.

It is telling how some of the loudest voices in the last decade who built their profiles dismissing anti-racism have all displayed a sudden mastery of anti-racist thought once the racism that they claimed was overblown started calling them slurs. Bigotry is wild. Wrote a book about it this year.

Interesting aside - arguments like the one Jacobin published here is why critical race theory and it's descendants formed. Folks got tired of the class only folks telling them that bigotry didn't produce material conditions.

The demand that people ignore bigotry in the name of "class solidarity" is an example of bigotry cosplaying as philosophy.

Bigotry corrupts everything it touches. This includes ideologies, political parties, institutions, and communities. Without exception, every entity that has tried to harness Bigotry for their own ends inevitably get taken over by bigots or implode under the strain of driving them out.

It was inevitable that the left side of the political spectrum fight over "economic populism" vs "identity politics" was going to spill over into the actual political arena and how the political coalition holds or breaks.

If we go with the pop cultural definition of working class, which excludes post secondary education credentials, then every single trade school/vote graduate is not working class.

Noah is correct here with bigotry. People are more comfortable labeling bigots are ignorant than immoral because labeling something immoral requires direct opposition which is uncomfortable. Ignorance simply requires instruction to be fixed.

Yeah, the first time I saw that I was cited in a book it freaked me out a little bit.

Wrote a whole book on why thinking bigotry is just people being uninformed is a mistake because it's deeper than that.

Bigots cosplay their Bigotry as philosophy, concern, and science for a reason. It works. Wrote a book about it.

Any analysis of African American political and activist culture in the 21st century that leaves out the impact of Hurricane Katrina should not be taken seriously.

Something that @jelaniya.bsky.social said that is true is how hurricane #Katrina had a similar impact on Black America that 9/11 did on the country as a whole. It really changed how Black culture saw America & was the impetus for millennial Black activists to discover critical race theory.

A theory: As a movement, wokeness was not destroyed by the right. Rather, the center left & left destroyed it because they did not want to be political accountable to woke folks who wanted to move away from class only politics. @olufemiotaiwo.bsky.social does this pass muster in your view?

It is astounding to see how many people have convinced themselves of the opposite but the statement " all politics is identity politics" is simply factual. When you accept this, observing and studying politics becomes so much easier.

I had history professors at my Southern University who would describe chattel slavery in all of its horror and students would cry and say "they had not been taught this before."

A plain text description of the middle passage and chattel slavery reads like a horror movie. I have never seen a museum or a history textbook do a plain text description.

As a southerner, I look at these images and they are unrecognizable as elite because, I think, respectability has a regional aspect that complicates how Blackness is understood internally. Dr. Jefferson raises the critical question: How does Black culture want to be seen by the world?

I don't know when or why the idea of colorblind law became frowned upon in the world of critical thought....but I think we should take it back and rediscover the Houston-Pauli intellectual tradition. #academicsky

Bigots will cosplay as leftists, progressives, liberals, conservatives, and anything else they think will help them sell their bigotry as anything other than what it is. Do. Not. Fall. For. It.

One of the lasting impacts of hurricane Katrina is that it really changed how African American millennials understood racism in American society. Terms like institutional & systemic racism entered the pop cultural lexicon & a generation of future advocates discovered critical race theory.

Something I notice in the entire discourse about the male loneliness epidemic, the crisis of masculinity, and the manosphere is the absence of male voices that are not lonely or in a crisis of masculinity. It seems to me that exploring how these dudes feel about all of this is a good research line

One of the more interesting aspects of the entire discourse of how society should teach men to be masculine is that it is also an admission that gender is not innate. It's a formal, hidden, and social curricula This entire moment is one giant cultural fight over what the curriculum should teach.

I agree. This is why the first mental faculty that bigotry destroys is morality...it's easier to brutalize people if you think it is morally required.
