Three's a crowd! 🐥🐥🐥 Last week we checked the home grown owlets, in a nestbox on our reserve. With the recent dry weather, we were slightly hesitant about if they'd made it. Though only 3 of the 6 survived, this is more than many other nests this year, so we are thankful for small mercies.

Tawny Owl Release 😍 After being found soaking wet and weak in the middle of a road as a chick, this owl spent several months growing up in our large aviary before a release on Wednesday night. The owl explored the opened aviary roof, leaving a nice 'deposit' before flying off to the nearby trees! 💩

Want nesting Swallows... build a pond!💧 With no accessible water or wet mud nearby we built a pond by one of our field shelters, hoping they nested. Swallows are a common rural bird but, declined by 25% in the last 30 years. They are frequent on the reserve in autumn but never nested... until now!

After 20 years, we have wild Barn Owls breeding at our nature reserve! 🦉🐣 A breeding female was discovered incubating SEVEN! eggs in June, with the chicks hatching in July. This is the largest clutch we have seen this year, testament to the bespoke habitat created with 24 acres of rough grassland.

A successful Tawny Owl release on the summer solstice... simply magic 🌟 Found stunned and underweight having hit a window at Costa Coffee (we think he'd enjoy a Mocha), this adult male was rehabilitated and released by our Conservation Officer Pip a week later, in woodland nearby. Fly strong 🪶💪

Cockchafers, aka May Bugs and Snartlegogs, are a prey item for many species. This week we found Barn Owl pellets containing elytra (wing casings) and legs of Cockchafer. Though invertebrates usually form a very small part of a Barn Owls diet, this owl couldn’t resist the chance of an easy meal! 🦉🍽️

Young Tawny Owls fledge at around 5 weeks old, but tend to leave the nest earlier than this during their ‘branching’ phase. Still dependent on their parents for food for up to 3 months after leaving the nest, they will sit around on the branches of nearby trees and beg for food once darkness falls 🦉

An amazing Dark-Breasted Barn Owl has been spotted in Lincolnshire since February 🤩 This 'guttata' sub species is found in mainland Europe, but very rarely some cross the North Sea from Belgium, Germany, Denmark or The Netherlands to winter or breed in the UK with our 'alba' birds 🧡🦉
