While I never thought I’d find myself defending bureaucracy, for an easy way to think about the positives and negatives of bureaucracy, here’s a chart fone the SOC101 textbook I’m using this semester (SOC, Witt 2024).

Bureaucracy is actually the most efficient form of government. Max Weber argued it replaced systems of promotion due to loyalty and connections, rather than expertise and achievement. In a bureaucracy you have rules and regulations.
