Division and fractions are not two distinct concepts even if your curriculum separates them into different modules or units. I recommend moving from equal group problems with whole number solutions to fractional amounts less than a whole within the same context/problem.

This or that? There is a push for students to use algorithms because they are "more efficient" and the standards say so. I argue that it's more important to understand different strategies and flexibly choose which one to use based on the context and the numbers.

A7: Sometimes students with disabilities really exist on the margins of math class, pulled out and given cold, clinical worksheets to help "fill gaps" instead of being allowed to do rich meaningful tasks. Viewing math as a human right would mean understanding that students with disabilities ALSO

In Counting Collections, it's important to allow mathematicians to take the lead. (Even if their strategy seems "inefficient" to you.) This group started with groups of 4 but struggled to count by 4s. I asked, "How can do to make this collection easier to count?"

Launching counting collections in a 3rd grade classroom, we started with choral counting by 10s. Then, students worked with partners to organize and count a collection. Snap photos and use them as image talks with your mathematicians.

Simple modifications to the Eureka curriculum makes it more engaging and accessible for all learners. Consider launching with an image to preview vocabulary and offering number set choices to provide scaffolds and extensions within the same problem.

What do you notice? What do you wonder? In what context is this true? I was waiting in line and a young man behind me was wearing this t-shirt. My brain got to mathing as I tried to figure this one out. After solving it I was reminded that context really matters.

This question and the data is yielded is really important for us to see. 99 fourth and fifth graders responded to this group's survey. -What do you notice? -What do you wonder? -How can these representations lead to change in how and what we are teaching?

Sometimes the problems in our curricula are too easy for our students. Consider posing open-ended extension questions that engage them in problem-solving using the same context. This keeps everyone immersed in the math and creates space for conferring with learners.

Finding the mistake(s) in someone else’s work requires mathematicians to understand a variety of strategies. Asking them to explain their thinking using numbers and words requires modeling and practice. What opportunities do you create for mathematicians to engage in this work?

Today's Choral Count, count by 1/3 was inspired by
