I would like to commend the tone of this post. Quite right.

Sometimes I write a polite private letter to a worthy group that accepts fossil fuel sponsorship asking them to rethink promoting the fossil fuel industry. Here's what they say and why I still think they should ditch the partnerships:

I hope @monashuniversity.bsky.social is listening. Monash and Woodside started a partnership in 2019 with the stated aim of Woodside transitioning to clean energy. Woodside instead went full steam ahead with new gas. The partnership is due for renewal but Monash should break free. Fool me once...

I'd like clarify this one. Actually, this partnership does have an influence on Woodside's behaviour. It emboldens them. It makes them part of society and facilitates their continued pollution.

Was recently asked to give a climate risk presentation in the Woodside building at @monashuniversity.bsky.social. Respectively told the organisers it was morally impossible to give my talk under that implied association. Akin to oncologist giving a lecture on cancer prevention in a ‘Marlboro centre’

Among the many, many open questions Monash left unanswered were the specifics of what naming rights Woodside Energy were granted for a building on campus -- raising the prospect that even if the partnership ends, the company's name may stay up on the building in perpetuity.

Instead of covering up its partnership with Woodside, Monash should rip it up altogether. Universities should be places that advance the public good, not help morally bankrupt companies like Woodside greenwash their reputation and muddy the science as they torch the planet for profit.
