BREAKING from @science.org: The Trump admin is seeking to kill nearly all climate research at NOAA, its climate science agency. Its near-final budget proposal would end all NOAA research labs, academic institutes, and regional climate centers. And it wants to fully end the NOAA Research division.

This is a huge loss. As a coauthor on the upcoming(?) Water chapter of the NCA6, I'm committed to continuing the work, but it will be a big lift without guidance & facilitation from USGCRP staff. It's early in the multi-year process of iterative reviews & revisions from agency scientists & public.

Some federal workers are going back to work. The USDA has been ordered to temporarily give over 5,000 workers their jobs back. Dozens of CDC scientists have been reinstated after being illegally fired. The National Science Foundation has rehired half of the workers it fired.

Just saw an email sent to a student of mine from a REU canceling their program due to staffing & federal research funding uncertainties. A REU was when I internalized my science ID & applying to grad school. If this continues, it will devastate my students #1 pathway to STEM careers.

It is simply not enough for universities to say, “Our grants & research offices are looking into how research will be affected by the latest directive.” University leaders must actively and very publicly make the case for the kind of work many of us do. The silence on this front is deafening.
