I feel like my breakfast might be trying to tell me something.

We watched this with our 10 year old daughter recently and it holds up ridiculously well. The rock songs work a treat, Ledger is adorable, and Bettany was robbed of an Oscar nomination. It has a lovely tactile feel too - no cgi. Really funny, charming and inspiring. Better than you remember.

Twice now my husband has mistaken animal voices for mine. This morning a dog was yap/howling somewhere outside and Joe called up the stairs, “Yeah?” Another time he was in the car in the driveway and a magpie was going crazy in a tree. He rolled down his window and asked me, “What did you say?”

It’s mortifying to be scrambling to fill a bookstore event but that’s the reality. I’m in Scotland and England next week. There are tix left for these events. The London one will be cancelled if I don’t sell some tickets soon so all pre-bookings and help with getting the word out is appreciated.

Oh look, they made a TV show about friends who return from the bar with not just a round of drinks, but also several packets of crisps.

A Wolverine in shepherd’s clothing. Sheep Detectives = Knives Out x Shaun the Sheep. Me and my 10yo loved it! But there were tonnes of young kids at the cinema today, and it’s not really a kids film. It’s far less comedic than the trailer. Very emotional, more than one death, plus proper mystery.

Me: I wonder why we havent heard from that couple in a while? My wife: *Maybe* it's because you kept sending lyrics to your parody song, Hotel Cat-ifornia to the group chat.

This is getting a bit revealing but sod it. Sometimes you have to flash an ankle to get your point across.

Had a lovely evening at a Vision Ireland fundraiser, reading and talking books alongside fellow writers Gill Perdue, Fiona McCann and Mary Minnock. Hopefully many funds were raised!

I almost got scammed there via WhatsApp and a booking.com impersonation. I now understand how/why scams work. They get you when you’re busy/distracted! I input my name and email and phone number before I stopped. They had real details of my holiday booking. Be careful out there!

Imagine if the arts was entitled to as much coverage as sports. Instead of constant reports of who won a match or a race again, a mandatory part of our news was discussing stories and music and exhibitions and stuff. Imagine a population raised with that as part of their everyday environment.

It constantly baffles me that time after time our Government shows no vision, no innovation. We are a small country! We led the world on the smoking ban, on gay marriage. Why can’t we innovate when it comes to renewable energy, housing, transport?

Dublin City Centre has been shut down for going on 36hrs now and there are groups of Gardai standing around just looking at the machinery parked across the streets cos apparently people can do anything they want whenever they want now as long as they pretend they represent farmers. It's bizarre

I’ve never had a spice bag. One time I actually googled “spice bag” because I didn’t know what’s in it. I was picturing one of those little cloth bags with just spices inside.

Well this is nice… my novel ‘Chaos Theory’ has just won a Silver Award at the Farnham Audiobook Competition 2026! The awards are part of Farnham Literary Festival. Great to see recognition for real voices in these times. The narrator is the amazing Shelley Atkinson, who does lots of Irish fiction.

Just found out ‘Patriot’ and ‘DTF St Louis’ have the same creator/writer/director. Both shows are so good - they take a conventional formula and turn it into something original and very (darkly) funny. And the cinematography is beautiful. Plus the writer wrote a bunch of original folk songs for P!

Happy with my unusual Mothers Day card! Reflecting all the meats in our cultural stew (or at least the ones popular in this house). At first I thought the mother on the left was morning me, pre-coffee.

Just remembering a friend’s first ever Guinness. He ordered, barman put the pint down to settle & took payment. Friend took the 3/4 full glass over to his table. After being mocked & derided by his friends, he then brought it back to the bar and said: “Excuse me, can I have the rest of it please?”
