Meet Marina from the Hutlab! Marina recently earned her Ph.D. in Molecular Epidemiology and is currently continuing her work as a postdoctoral researcher in the lab. Her work focuses on human–environment microbial interactions and transmission, particularly within built environments.

She studied microbial structure–function via multiomics and modeling, and virus–host interactions with Nanopore. As a postdoc, she explores microbial dynamics, coevolution, and human–animal convergence.

Welcome Sithija Manage, a fourth-year PhD student in Statistics at Cornell, who joins the lab this summer as a visiting graduate researcher! His work focuses on developing statistically rigorous methods for microbiome data, currently addressing subject-level confounding in PERMANOVA.

Eric and Kelsey were happy to welcome Lab and BST 281 alum Sanjana Kulkarni back to the course this week for a guest lecture on bioinformatics workflows! The lecture included a hands-on demo of QC and taxonomic profiling of human airway sequencing using Snakemake.

A warm wave to Dr. Prooksa Ananchuensook, a transplant hepatologist at Chulalongkorn University in Thailand, who is currently a research fellow with Dr. Long Nguyen and working with our lab to understand the connection between the microbiome and chronic liver diseases.

Welcome, Dr. Emily Green, a new postdoc joining our HMAC group. Emily completed her PhD in Microbiology at UConn and a postdoc at the USDA, where she focused on environmental microbiomes, including insects, soil, plants, and nematodes. We are excited to have her in the lab!

Earlier this month Curtis attended the CGC Grand Challenge Summit, representing both the OPTIMISICC and PROSPECT teams. OPTIMISTICC is several years into their investigation of the CRC microbiome, and PROSPECT is just launching their consortium to investigate early-onset CRC. @cancerresearchuk.org
