Top Carney adviser wanted list of oil and gas cap ‘off-ramps’ in 2023, documents show
OTTAWA — One of Prime Minister Carney’s top advisors was hedging his bets against the Liberal government’s oil and gas emissions cap months before it was announced in late 2023, according to documents obtained through access-to-information. Correspondence and briefing materials from early to mid-2023 show that then deputy finance minister Michael Sabia sought guidance from his staff on “potential off-ramps” from the cap, presumably to allow the government a graceful exit from the policy..

‘Been on both sides’: Edmonton mayoral hopeful Jaffer wants cities to press Ottawa on bail reform
OTTAWA — An Edmonton mayoral hopeful known for his own highly publicized brush with the law says he wants cities to lead the charge for tougher federal bail laws. Rahim Jaffer, who’ll be standing as an independent in next month’s civic election, said that the Liberal government’s loosening of bail rules has made recidivism a growing problem in Edmonton. “We’ve seen police in particular find it very hard to do their jobs when they’re having to deal day in, day out with the same handful of repeat offenders, who keep ending up back on the street,” said Jaffer.

Alberta health minister defends COVID shot fees, expects other provinces to follow suit
OTTAWA — Alberta’s Health Minister Adriana LaGrange says she’s not worried about national reaction to the province’s new policy of making most residents pay out-of-pocket for COVID shots. In fact, she expects other jurisdictions to eventually follow in Alberta’s footsteps, after Ottawa made provinces and territories responsible for buying their own vaccines earlier this year. “I know that other provinces are looking at what Alberta’s doing because we’ve all seen wastage,” LaGrange told the National Post in an interview on Monday.

OTTAWA — Bonnie Critchley is used to breaking the mould. A trailblazer in uniform, Critchley was just 17 years old when she became the second woman ever to serve as an armoured crewman in her unit. She and reservist dad Steve later made history as the first father–daughter gunnery crew in the Royal Canadian Armoured Corps. She’s now looking to take out Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre in one of the safest Conservative ridings in Canada, running as an independent in the upcoming Battle River—Crowfoot byelection.
