Not that net spend correlates with success, but you can see here the investments to build the first league winning team, to rebuild the midfield, and more recently to start the rebuild of the second league winning team. For all the arguments that Klopp was not backed, he deffo was when necessary.

Imagine Reece having more loyalty to his boyhood club than Trent. Shows who’s the bigger player after all, fam.

Brilliant to see Emery use the recent clarification of Elliott’s contract to give him a meaningful opportunity in the EL game today.

By beating Galatasaray on Weds Liverpool would also help clinch a 5th CL spot for the PL.

Incidentally in the group stage Liverpool mostly used outswingers on corners and did well. On Tuesday they switched to inswingers (to go with the new PL meta) and the ref kept giving fouls to the defenders. Seems to be something UEFA has told the refs. Definitely something to consider for next week.

Second time this season that Liverpool had three aways in one week and incidentally both times included a trip to Galatasaray. Never an easy thing to do, going to Istanbul, and even more difficult when you are traveling all week. A bit of bad luck with the draw.

The crazy thing is, Liverpool’s task next week is not the most difficult among the PL teams in the CL. Not gonna be easy of course but easier than those of City, Chelsea and *checks notes* Spurs. If Liverpool can advance, they are unlikely to face another PL team until the final. Wild week.

Some legendary ties on this list. Hopefully next week’s game is more like the one against Villarreal (early first goal and ultimately a great result on the way to the EL final) than against Atletico (which actually was a great performance but a terrible result on the way to covid shutdown).

The (non-) usage of CJ is a very puzzling aspect, given how well he has performed. I have no idea how much of it is workload management (he will reach a career high in minutes as Dan points out and has a history of injuries) and how much of it is Slot choosing to stubbornly stick with his ideas.

Flo, Dom and Macca all had 80% or lower pass completion yesterday and that was after improving in the second half. You cannot control a game when your midfielders cannot complete a pass. Flo and Dom were the worst. One probably rusty, the other overplayed. If only Slot had a midfielder who can pass.

About Slot and rotation… at least now we have enough evidence that he has learned nothing from last season. After all the BS talk about needing to rotate more, he starts the same midfielders and does not even use all of his subs, with fresh legs on the bench. The definition of insanity, etc.

Not one to exaggerate but the next three games are indeed “must win” given the opposition and the stakes in the two most important competitions for this club. FSG fired Kenny despite two cup finals and a trophy (!) so a deep FA cup run (which may end in early April) is not going to save Arne Slot.

I was in a 2 hour briefing today on the Iran War. All the briefings are closed, because Trump can't defend this war in public. I obviously can't disclose classified info, but you deserve to know how incoherent and incomplete these war plans are. 1/ Here's what I can share:

This. Maybe the atmosphere affected them, but they have been there once this season. The lack of composure and calmness was inexplicable. Forget bringing Heitinga back, hire a new shrink.

Dom has already played more minutes this season than he did in all of last season, and is on pace to obliterate his career total set in his last season at RBL. Maybe Slot should start using his midfield depth more, lest he wants to be called a bald fraud. The fact Jones did not play today was weird.

Credit to Slot for wanting to make sure that Sir Kenny could share the record. Slot has respect for Liverpool’s legends.

Better in the second half but not good enough. The game was lost in the first 5 minutes, as the high press created good opportunities to score first but the attackers could not have made worse decisions even if they tried. Florian had the excuse of being rusty but every player was poor.

Ekitike had one on one with their GK and Gakpo had the follow up shot cleared off the line literally seconds before they got their soft penalty. Sliding door moments. There will be chances tonight, just need to be calm and clinical.

Great work by NYT showing Trump's war is the most unpopular ever. Supports my argument (see below) that in some ways the public rejection of Trump across the board is a very heartening development:

Some is strength of schedule stuff, and Liverpool did beat up on weaker teams like *checks notes* Qarabag, Eintracht, Atletico and Real Madrid, but overall the group phase performance was good. Now need to do even better in the knockouts. Huge first step tonight at a place Liverpool did struggle.
