Our Brazilian buttonbush attracts lots of pollinators but it can spread easily so we keep it contained in a raised bed. Today it was visited by a female pipevine swallowtail butterfly! 🦋 We have its larval host plant, pipevine, nearby so we will hopefully see the next generation! 🌱 #bloomscrolling

A reporter asked if Trump would order the removal of trans flags in DC. Trump says he wouldn't oppose it but says he could get around lawsuits by arguing it incites violence. The reporter follows up by asking if he would label trans people as a domestic terror threat to ban the trans flag.

One of our #nativeplants I’m less excited to see is this Nodding Spurge. It’s a summer annual, popping up outside in flower beds and all of my potted plants, and it will reseed itself prolifically. Still, it’s native to the US and despite the mildly toxic milky sap it has cute little blooms. 🌱

American beautyberries are fruiting! These #nativeplants bear gorgeous edible purple berries in late summer and fall. Birds love them and while they don’t have much flavor on their own, you can concentrate them to make a delicious jelly! 🌱 I’ve got several bushes and they grow well in sun or shade

2-0! Purple and gold represent! September is college football season and the salvia is showing off in a deep purple. Salvia farinacea is one of our #nativeplants and this cultivar was named one of Louisiana’s super plants. It thrives in full sun and will bloom until frost 🌱 #bloomscrolling

Khaaaaan!!! That’s how I felt this morning finding all of my blueberries and blackberries infested with red humped caterpillars. These hungry hungry caterpillars 🐛 are native to the US and rarely defoliate entire trees, but they can be a real menace when it comes to small fruit trees 🌱

Friend or foe? Bit of both. Asian lady beetles are often distinguished from American lady bugs (also actually beetles) as a nuisance pest around houses due to their tendency to swarm. In small numbers though they can be a welcome sight, controlling the aphid population on milkweed in your garden 🌱

Sugar baby watermelon update! 🍉 🌱 They grow and ripen on a trellis just fine BUT the weight of the melon pulls on the vine and my cattle panel trellis heats up too much which can damage the vines. Next year I need to support the melons earlier and move to a wood trellis or ditch it altogether

Today we have a carpenter bee visiting our #nativeplants. This Trumpet vine along the back fence is a volunteer. You may have seen it as a weed covering power lines as this aggressive native plant will thrive anywhere it has space to climb. It’s a great feeder for native bees and hummingbirds 🌱
