So many people assume they’d do the right thing in this situation but never do. From bullying people who speak out to failing to investigate serious claims quickly and effectively, while hiding their proactive complicity. It’s shocking how easily people are punished for raising any concerns.

Very sorry to read of the death of Marika Sherwood, who linked me up with Miranda Kaufmann & Onyeka Nubia when I was at the very beginning of researching my book. She was clearly a pioneering & inspirational historian & I wish I'd been able to meet her in person: johnblanke.com/marika-sherw...

What sad news! Her history of the 1948 Pan-African congress in Manchester transformed how I, as an immigrant, thought of the city I was living in at the time.

Born a Hungarian Jew in 1937, Sherwood was part of a small but significant group of Jewish scholars and activists in Britain who studied Black experience and history and advocated for anti-racism.

Colonialism is the ultimate cause of #extinction for so many species (in much of the world, introduced predators, habitat-loss, overhunting etc are all consequences of #colonialism), but it's rare for that link to be made explicit in #museums' labels, like with @mnhn.fr's #thylacine here. 👌

Marika was instrumental to the development of Black histories in Britain and elsewhere. She was also an important mentor to so many scholars. Her presence will be missed but her legacies will endure.

A brilliant summary of a brilliant scholar and her contribution to this field. She was completely fearless and inspirational.

RIP to Dr. Marika Sherwood: a huge inspiration among historians and activists, and a founder of the Black and Asian Studies Association. Without her tireless contributions over the past few decades, the field of Black British History would look very different today. We owe her so much 🖤✊🏽

It has been six months since the 2024 racist riots in the UK. Fuelled by anti-immigrant and racist hate, 29 ‘demonstrations’ and riots erupted across 27 towns and cities in the UK, including Middlesbrough, Liverpool, Manchester and Leeds.

I didn’t realise it at the time but this list, and my book, were also in the Karachi Chronicle as a book to read in 2025. There are many reasons why this matters to me. Meanwhile, I’m finalising my talks for spring. No promises, but if you’d like me to do an event, now is the best time to ask.

Went to an absolutely fabulous conference on Black Power led by the wonderful Kennetta Hammond Perry and Kerry Pimblott. There are so many excellent PhDs and first books in the works from a new cohort of scholars in the field. It’s so exciting to see them flourishing and being so roarsome!
