Important #rewilding news. For the first time in over a century, an Iberian lynx has been seen in the Catalan Pyrenees. Filmed by a camera near to the frontier with France, the feline had been released near Seville.

Illegal guns discovered in the hands of Pyrenean shepherds. The question is why they were hiding them in their huts. Four bears have been illegally killed in the mountains in recent years... It must also be said that shepherds don't feel safe.

A bear has been illegally killed in Asturias, NE Spain. Following two other killings in 2024, the bear was found with his foot in a leghold trap.

One to watch, a trial to control Himalayan balsam near us. Himalayan balsam is visibly one of the most vigorous plants, outcompeting all other herbaceous plants where it grows.

Bad news for biodiversity. The French President, Emmanuel Macron, visited Aveyron, home of Roquefort cheese yesterday. He announced that he was against wolves where pastoralism is important. The number of wolves in France is already decreasing, yet he called for more killing.

More wolves in Spain, with 333 packs recorded 2021-24, up 12% from the previous census. (The estimated number of individuals has fallen to 1300-1600). However, the increased protection given in 2021 has been reversed and hunting north of the Douro river is restarting. #rewilding

I saved a friend from drowning (we were c10 yrs old) in a v crowded swimming pool. Watching from the shallow end, I could see her behaviour in the deep end was suddenly odd - bobbing upright, no waving, no noise. The life guard didn’t notice her.
