More politicians need to adopt this stance and actually act on a set of values. If citizens are expected to adapt when they're RIF'ed, laid off, or entire professions disappear (I.e. idev) then so can our so-called leaders who should represent our country's top knowledge and leadership.

On one hand, perverse logic driving this decision MIGHT go: No need to look at the data, disasters are only going to get more deadly, destructive, and expensive. On the other hand: 27 individual billion-dollar climate/weather events in the US in 2024 (up from 5-year moving average of 23).

Been thinking a lot about AI and @xiyebastida.bsky.social writing here reflects many of my feelings. In a worst case scenario AI is devastating to our world & society. But even in more positive or likely scenarios, I’m not sure we’re better off with AI than without it. Social costs > benefits

For a few years now there has been an unspoken tension between the AI and sustainability movements. This scheme escalates it to full on conflict and the tables are tilted severely in favor of AI. We stand to lose so much, not just in terms of natural capital but also humanity.
