75% of consumers said "coshing people over the head and running off with their money should be illegal". The European Society of Coshers, the International Mugging Association, large Cosh manufacturers and the Federation of Utter Bastards showed low support.

What do you mean there is a footer on the page with infinite scroll? What do you mean it is important the additional content pushes the footer down before it enters the view because of performance metrics? What do you mean the SSR is slow on the server because of css-in-js? What the f is going on?

I love invoker commands, but my biggest gripe with them is that they're not easy to use as a progressive enhancement and you need JavaScript to detect support for them. Longterm, when there is wider support, this will be less of an issue, but it makes them harder to adopt today.

One of many things I enjoy about baking my site using
@11ty.dev
is that I can generate the site, move the directory, update some part of the stack, such as the JS runtime, generate it again, and then diff the two outputs, which guarantees nothing else unintentionally changed.

Am I missing something, or is using JavaScript the only way to feature detect the Invoker Command API? Asking for Progressive Enhancement and Graceful Degradation.

Just to be clear, no government bailout this time. Can we agree on that one in advance? Food stamps? Eviction protection? Fine. But no bailout.

AI itself isn’t the problem. The problem is the stuffing of AI into every facet of our lives, the indiscriminate wielding of it against messy human problems, the band-aiding over inherent and sometimes unsolvable complexity - and all of this with a distinct lack of interrogation into consequences.

Working in tech can be so fucking suffocating. I’ve been MIA here bc I had no space to breathe with my last role and how toxic things were there. All that just to be let go lol it’s so not worth selling your soul for a check whew

I was about to write something witty about the police helicopter that has been hovering above my home for 15 minutes — felt like an hour. But I couldnʼt overcome my lack of confidence in my ability to express myself in English. Silver lining: I did not resort to AI for that.

If you actually care about the web platform, the open web, and the way AI is degrading the whole experience...I don't think releasing a glorified ChatGPT wrapper is the way to show that care.

DIY Netlify
Today, I wanted to share how I built my own DIY Netlify that I use to host over a dozen sites for just $10/month, with way more control and much faster build times. Let’s dig in! The Netlify Revolution A few years back, Netlify helped usher in the era of static site generators by offering a really easy way for folks to host and deploy static HTML. All you had to do was push your site to GitHub.

I know German is hard or whatever. One of the reasons is the closed compound words. I also know hyphenation on the web isn’t solved yet. But this is the third word failing within 30 minutes of using the web. All could’ve been avoided with a soft hyphen. At least this one wasn’t cut off.

Hey fellow frontendlers - I spend a lot of time on my phone. Too much tbh - but I can't always grab my laptop. I want to be able to mess with HTML and CSS comfortably while on my phone, and see quick results. Codepen app doesn't do that. The web version is hard to control on a phone. Any ideas?

The thing most people look for in leadership are absolute rules that they can apply “do this, not that” style. The truth is, leadership is thinking in systems. Org health and productivity are related. Org change isn’t just moving TO something, it’s FROM-TO, and so on. Consider the whole system.

The only way to get an approximation of a correct bit of code from an AI is to ask the right questions (i.e., create the correct prompt). It seems to me that, as a profession, we have been struggling to ask the right questions for 80 years now. It's a hard problem.

I got an idea for a custom element, but I’ve no time to try making it at the moment: <soft-br> Adds a line break in it’s place, given that the line break does not increase the parent element’s number of lines. Maybe also doing that only when off-screen, because of defer and flashing text bla bla

It's fun that protesters burning surveillance-camera cars are retroactively responsible for ICE kidnappings, & trans people being rude on socials about threats to health care are retroactively the reason we're losing that care. Suffer nicer next time. The discourse never fails (to blame the victim).

Container style queries can read custom properties. So, container size queries using custom properties, when? _It’s the same query as @media, so custom properties won’t work._ Okay then, @container inline-size(size <= --size-2){} when?
