Doom hit at exactly the right moment for me. Kids trading floppy disks with games your parents would be aghast at. The slim but ever present fear of a computer virus infecting your computer. Realizing that you could build upon the game to make your own thing. We had it good back then, right?

I remember them! Having an HQ in a junkyard seemed so cool, and all the secret ways in and out were neat. Them and Encyclopedia Brown taught me to think about stuff and try to see the logic in a situation.

Day 1 was straightforward. I should have gone to bed an hour ago, because I solved it in about 6 minutes, but I've spent the last hour code golfing to get my solution in fewer chars. Good thing it's Saturday night.

Getting ready to do Advent of Code for the fourth year in a row. New job, so new computer to set up. Just making sure all my dependencies are downloaded and ready to go. For anybody who cares, I do it in Typescript, but I might come back and rewrite in PHP for practice.

First book from this list was The Bright Sword by Lev Grossman. Fun original take on the King Arthur mythos. I enjoyed the modern and fresher spins on the backstories of some of the more obscure knights a bit more than the main storyline, but would definitely recommend.

Reread Arthur C. Clarke’s Childhood’s End for the first time in a long while. It still mostly holds up, I think, as a work of classic sci-fi. Influential and thought provoking. It’s open to interpretation, but I’m of the opinion that it’s a downer of an ending.

Joining a company around the holidays is bittersweet. Great to be at the new job. But, with no vacation days stored up, it can be pretty lonely while everyone's calendar is all OOO.
