I am thankful for being able to survive this long, but I know this isn’t tenable. That my existence as it stands isn’t remarkable or to be envied. This is pain, and it’s constant. It’s also not a fault of my own. This is everyone’s shared responsibility that a world cannot be cultivated for us.

I have done okay during my time as a SWer, but the honest to God truth as that I am aware of where I am in the social pecking order. In every conversation, in every act of solidarity, I know that I am the Black sheep. This is greater magnified with disability and COVID. Can you begin to imagine?

We are not “perfect.” We’ll never be “perfect.” We shouldn’t even strive for “perfection.” Yet, this is our experience, and it is not fun and games. It’s hardly ever casual. We are somehow more criminal with even bigger shoes to fill. Does this not feel incredibly asymmetrical? Of course it does.

This is made worse being a Black trans femme in an under resourced, low-income neighborhood instead of a resourced, white enclave. Stepping out the door is a real act of courage for us. There’s guns pointed at us from all directions yelling conflicting instructions. But you have to be “perfect.”

Obviously Black trans women exist and are vibrant and are complex and the whole nine yards, but this feeling is what makes our oppression feel so claustrophobic from ALL sides.

What is crushing about this experience is that you know that you are both an object and an apparition. An object for men, and an apparition to all. Your existence inside and outside “perfection” will never be real until it’s time to read your obituary—and ofc, you still don’t exist.

With white supremacy and neoliberalism, the goal post for being accepted by whites—extending to Black exceptionalism too—will never stay fixed. Black trans woman not adhering to “perfection” will always be in question. You don’t get to be soft. Work hard. Make that money. Get those surgeries.

This is not the fault of trans people, of course. It’s heteropatriarchy. But I see this racialized heteropatriarchy in queer spaces. Black trans women will be more masculinized regardless of individual journey or personality, anything less than perfection is sickening. ~And the goal post shifts.

“Now, where are you going with this?” Hello, bad faith actor. I’m getting there. This expectation that white trans girls get to be fat, cute, silly, pre-transition, etc is not the same expectation held for Black trans women. We have to be slim thick, hung, have our hair did—basically “perfect.”

My observation is easy to see. Whiteness is as contradictory as racism. It is the most violent racial group systemically but is always perceived as softer, more approachable, even feminine. White masculinity is no different.

Even when you look at the algorithm of these “inclusive” trans subs, I want you to scroll through 50 posts and tell me how many of them are visibly Black. The upvotes are likely smaller for Black trans women too. This can be seen in subs that are community-focused and/or for marketing.

If you pay close attention, Black trans nsfw subs don’t include trans women across the spectrum. You must be a vixen lest you be labeled a man “cross-dressing.” Yet, many “inclusive” subs don’t require the same standards for white transness (ie. It’s all mostly acceptable regardless of body type)

About trans desirability across race: If you look at trans subreddits moderated by cis men or around the cis male gaze, you’ll find that subs open to “everyone” (ie. predominantly white) are markedly different than subs curated for Black men. News flash: Black trans women lose. (a thread)
