The Center is very sad to report the untimely passing of Andrew Cooper (Warwick), who was a Fellow at the Center for Philosophy of Science in 2023. Andrew was an outstanding philosopher in addition to a wonderful human being.

i was incredibly excited to be published by the hopkins review a few years ago. it was something i’d read since undergrad. if they were looking for a way to suck every dram of good will i had for their press or their university out and spit it into an open sewer, baller move, i guess.

"[5-month-old Zainab Abu Halib] had weighed over 3 kilograms (6.6 pounds) when she was born, her mother said. When she died, she weighed less than 2 kilograms (4.4 pounds) ... Zainab was one of [at least] 85 children to die of malnutrition-related causes in Gaza in the past three weeks."

Tonight's discussion concerns the difference between organicism and vitalism, because so often the two are confused. To my mind, the key difference is that organicism can make more sense of death, while vitalism - because everything is alive - can't. For vitalism, death can only be illusion.
