A University of Utah Nordic skier won an individual national championship today wearing shorts, with the event in Utah because the original venue had no snow. Which pretty much sums up this winter. Utah with their 7th national championship since 2017.

Here we are folks. The Parleys watershed numbers are bleak. Not that the others are any better. Where I was in Big Cottonwood last week I measured a 20” snow depth (at about 8,000 feet elevation near the top of the canyon.

Weather forecasting near 80 next week? We are so cooked. Absolutely worst case scenario for the already bleak low and mid elevation snow. Hitting peak statewide average snow depth this early is so bad. Get ready for rationing.

Tragic story. You can get to this area where this girl died from a green run down low and a black run above. There are backcountry access points from both. There are always tracks under the ropes in this area.

Bill failed in committee. The premise was fine (allow homes on lots no larger than 5400 sq ft) but this bill was overly complex and had a bunch of unnecessary provisions that just complicated it.

It’s because it doesn’t really do anything. Cities have to tell applicants they can’t use spray irrigation (which is actually already prohibited in local codes for cities to qualify for water wise rebates) and the type of new development it applies to are mostly using water wise principles.

Dire. Needs drastic, consequential actions immediately. The GSL drainages are at record lows. The odds of more than slight improvements are dwindling. I think step one: cap the daily water use of all industrial users, prohibit any new bottling beverages with water (yes including breweries).

Update: skiing was surprisingly fun today. Places that have less snow in February than they typically have in June, but some decent softish spots.
