In January, Green City Councillors secured BIG WINS in the 2045 Local Plan: 💷 Promoting the Oxford Living Wage for ALL workers across Oxford. 🍻 Securing greater protections for local pubs. ⚡ Supporting local, community-owned renewable energy. 🛝 Creating new playground spaces in our city centre!

If the Gorton and Denton swing was replicated across Oxford, the Greens would win HALF of all seats - gaining 7 and holding 5. This would make us the biggest group on the council meanwhile Labour would be wiped out, losing 11 councillors.

Fascinating how these Labour MPs have found moral standing as soon as they realise their seats might be at threat. It's almost like they are careerists with no values. Don't get me wrong, opposing Mahmood's immigration proposals is good. But where were they when these heinous proposals were made?

Keir Starmer knew that Peter Mandelson continued his close relationship with Jeffrey Epstein after Epstein's conviction for child sex offences. He brought him into the heart of the Labour government anyway. Starmer cannot continue as Prime Minister. He must go.

It was obvious Council leadership hoped to fence sit this one, discretely aiming for postponement whilst attempting to wash their hands of any responsibility. Incredibly their bluff was called… by their own Labour government - but excellent we’ll have actual clarity on the matter by tomorrow.

I hope I'm wrong- but Labour absolutely seem to be trying to have their cake and eat it. Attend the emergency meeting but block a vote happening (how democratic). Lab cllrs speak in favour of the elections (only 16 weeks away!) going ahead, but the Labour cabinet says "nah, we should postpone".

Really good summary of the Oxford City Council special council meeting tonight. I, like many other councillors, am very disappointed that councillors were not given a chance to vote on the prospect of cancelling May's elections. But a clear majority of councilors spoke against cancellation tonight.

Emily Kerr (Green, St Mary’s) says that a late decision to prevent councillors from voting on the issue at this meeting is “extremely democratically problematic”, and asks for her view to be minuted.

Finally, a response to the pavement parking consultation! The Labour govt should set national standards - with some flexibility for local areas. Leaving it all up to councils risks a patchwork of different standards causing confusion and not freeing up our streets for everyone to get around.

OCC's Labour leader has refused to rule out cancelling this year's elections. Voters across Oxford deserve a say, and local elections MUST go ahead in 2026 for the people's voice to be heard.

Oxford Greens have gained a 9th councillor, making them joint second largest opposition in the City Council. Independent Cllr Edward Mundy, who was elected for Labour in '21 and '22, but had left Labour along with 9 other councillors over Keir Starmer’s position on Gaza, joined the Greens today.
