The South is home to the most LGBTQ people in the US. When you shit on the South, you're contributing to a long legacy of marginalization and oppression. The South is home to some of the most badass people, wonderful food, diverse culture, and folks who are highly skilled and super funny.

Remember to save your signs (and any others you find thrown away) from both protests and counter protests. Your local archive would LOVE to have them (and if you're in the South we would love to have them). Make sure history remembers!

In 1997, Ellen DeGeneres came out on her show. People across the US were unable to watch it at home as local television stations refused to air the episode. In Birmingham, ABC 33/40 was 1 of these. A large watch party grew out of the backlash and these buttons were handed out to who attended.

1982 Bob Damron's Address Book. Damron guides were gay travel guides, named after traveling businessman, Bob Damron. Here you can see an explanation of the listings and some common hankie code meanings. Handkerchiefs were used to signal to other queer people what you were looking for.
