NC Pride History! In 1980s Charlotte, LGBTQ+ activists marched in DC with a huge âGay Charlotteâ banner and launched the cityâs first official Pride Week in 1984. Workshops, affirming churches, and bold calls for justice made the Queen City impossible to ignore.

Pride in the Archives! In 1989 & 1990, Atlanta Pride grew into a major movement for LGBTQ+ rights. Thousands marched under banners like âWe March for Those Who Canât,â demanding housing, dignity, and visibility. Photos from Southern Voice now live in the Digital Library of Georgia.

Pride History! In 1964, the Emma Jones Society, founded by Ray and Henry Hillyer, held a beach party on the 4th of Julyâa precurser to early Pride events in the state. What started as an informal network of men trading LGBTQ magazines grew into one of the biggest parties for gay men in the South!
