The key issue isn't if an LLM can do fact-checking, which I firmly believe it can if used right. What matters is how you use an LLM. The intention of a prompt, how you interpret outputs. Would love to see a study of 25 people using LLMs to fact check the same document, that would be interesting.

Three traits I think I think map onto quality LLM usage, specifically identifying sycophancy & output reliability: Hypervigillance; comfort with untrustworthy authority figures; recursive thinking. Not a healthy trio of traits but they create a great mental stew

I'd like to get a better sense of the models used, but there's certainly a correlation between newer model & decreased sycophancy. The gap is still massive and doesn't seem possible to close with "better model". You can improve the output but it doesn't change my input or my personal understanding

LLM sycophancy is partly explained by its removal of friction. Everything looks, sounds, feels correct when there is no friction. If you ask for advice, it will give you the advice you asked for. Requires constant work to stay ahead of the sycophancy and even then, we're still behind.
