responding to a recent Science paper was just posted. The paper found more genes with consistent support for sponge-sister than ctenophore-sister. We found several technical issues that, when corrected, reverse the conclusions and recover ctenophore-sister.

These are Federal Advisory Committees (FACs), which are groups of outside experts that provide advice and support to agencies FOR FREE. I was Vice Chair of the Marine Protected Areas FAC until it was terminated by the first Trump administration in 2019 through Executive Order 13875.

My REU in 2011 helped me understand I had a path in research. Since then, I’ve had the privilege of mentoring several REU’s, many of whom have gone onto grad school or scientific careers. The gutting of these programs will have a devastating impact for many years.

I worry that the focus on NOAA's weather predicting value is ignoring the millions of other ways NOAA researchers enrich communities and local economies. There are no oysters without NOAA. There are no blue crabs without NOAA. NOAA trains teachers. NOAA is the lifeblood of coastal communities.
