There is a general sense of rotting.

He held his middle knuckle to his cheek, and a finger coming out of his opposite cheek wiggled as if it was connected to the knuckle. Seemingly an odd trick, I was even more perplexed when he moved his knuckle away from his face and I realized that he had an actual finger growing out of his cheek.

Our plane crashed in the forest. Somehow, we survived, crawled from the wreck and walked deep into the woods for safety. Exhausted, we eventually stopped in the middle of nowhere, miles from any sign of civilization. That is, until we saw it. There, among the trees, stood a Harris/Walz road sign.
