she sliced like a knife through everything
certainly indicative of SOMETHING that the first thing Light Yagami says to Raye Penber in the Death Note manga—in the middle of what is ostensibly a life-or-death situation!!—is 「失礼ですが、その喋り方…あなた日本人ではないですね?」(excuse me, but from yr way of speaking—you’re not japanese, are you?)

This week, I ponder the question: what is the point of the work I do? If I do say so myself, I’m unusually clear-sighted about the point of (my) work. The existential angst is obviously present but manages not to overwhelm the essay 😁

Extremely back on my "wake up babe, new

I’m always thinking about this tumblr post from back in the day about garlic. it was like you should always use more garlic than the recipe indicates, like unless the recipe is literally a recipe for “one clove of garlic”—and even then, use two.

the word for "taboo word" in Japanese being 禁句 (きんく, "kinku", basically as close to "kink" as you can come in Japanese morphology) is either an incredible coincidence or a sign of a much deeper conspiracy

i'd been confused about why journalling feels frequently pretty tough still, since that's not really how i hear about it. but i realized: i am a trusty grill in a busy restaurant. in order to function well at high volume, it is necessary to scrape up the grease often. this is journalling for me.

today the woman at the Japanese bookstore asked the folks ahead of me—who were there for the first time—if they wanted a membership. I've been there about once a week for more than a month, but I guess after they turned her down she was less inclined to try on me xD

🎵 I'd go out and party / but I'm scared of what I'll see / so I'll stay home tonight and every night 🎶 I think a lot about the ritual / ceremonial mode that certain kinds of dance music can access? Hannah Diamond's "Invisible" is a perfect example.

‘I’m a composer. Am I staring extinction in the face?’: classical music and AI
Technology is radically reshaping how we make music. As I dug deeper into this for a radio 3 documentary I began to wonder if creative organisations are right to be so upbeat about AI. Are we riding the wave or will the wave destroy us?

You can really see the price impact of tariffs on audio equipment like speakers, microphones, & headphones—they're some of the few electronics not exempt from tariffs (most smartphones/computers are still tariff-free) & so prices are up more than 12% year-on-year
