In an 1855 letter to his cousin William Darwin Fox: "“Seeds will sink in saltwater – all of nature is perverse & will not do as I wish it, & just at present I wish I had the old Barnacles to work at & nothing new.” To Joseph D. Hooker (also in 1855) those seeds were "“horrid” &“ungrateful rascals.”
