He was a birdwatcher, on one side are some feathers from his favourite birds including a Jay, and on the other are some of his cremated bone fragments, echoing the Egyptian soul weighing ritual.

In 2012 I edited the fifth edition of The Natural Death Handbook, and commissioned a book of essays called Writing on Death. One of these was by the terminally ill Carla Zilber-Smith, a brilliant Canadian born theatre professor. She sprung this video on her heartbroken friends at her funeral.

Our first funeral using the amazing Loop living coffin. It was not made, rather it has been grown, in just eight days, by injection mycelium spores into a frame filled with recycled hemp fibre. The mushroom eats the hemp fibre, and upon burial, helps the body breakdown much quicker. Genius.

I know this May drought in the UK is bad, but my god, this spring is absolutely astonishing. I feel like a blind man after sight restoring operation. Here are graves at Sharpham Meadow, sporting what Whitman called “the uncut hair of the grave.” A riot of colour and insect life and beauty.
