Senior newsroom meteorologist. Lover of snowstorms and hurricanes. And kitties šāā¬
Today is my 43rd birthday. The last year and a half has easily been the hardest period of my life. But Iām grateful for finding my way back to my calling. I get to write about the weather for the SF Chronicle, and today I got a copy of the paper and showed it to my 4-year-old son.

One of my favorite things about living near the bay is the barely visible haze! I canāt get a good picture tonigjt. But itās there. Lurking in the background. Visible if you look closely enough. And a harbinger of whatās to come.

Storm clouds are building over Mt Vaca ahead of an afternoon chance of thunder and lightning in Napa & Solano counties. Downpours are most likely in the mountains but heavy rain showers are possible along I-80 and into Napa Valley. Thunder prospects are lower on the south of the delta.

Another day of brutal heat in the southern U.K. And another all time high for May (95ĀŗF). Ireland set an all time May record as well (84ĀŗF). Keep in mind how old many of the households in the U.K. do not have A/C.

Check out how far inland the marine layer went this morning! nice little cloud spike all the way to the central valley. The clouds aren't going anywhere. The marine layer is around 2,000feet deep. That supports widespread low clouds and pockets of coastal drizzle throughout Monday.

The CUTI and BEUTI indices through the end of April confirm this. Recovery for the Bay Area and central coast. But not enough of a reversal for SoCal where the marine heatwave continues.

Quite the coastal eddy offshore today! These things form winds just above the marine layer turn more northerly, while air near the surface curls back from the south along the coast. Some funky winds as a result, mostly southerly. Clouds hard to break in the city as well.

Confidence is now pretty good in a trough/inside-slider pattern around Tuesday into Wednesday. But this looks more like a cooler, windier pattern versus a widespread heat, major offshore wind event.

Somewhat lost in NOAAs official seasonal hurricane forecast released today: The eastern Pacific is hot and ripe for hurricane development. It may be a slow season in the Atlantic, but that's likely not the case for the Pacific.

We were hopeful for a broad scale warmup on Mothers Day, but it was going to be iffy. Onshore flow remains in favor. Satellite imagery shows the marine layer is mostly confined to the coast and a few coastal gaps. So, its another sharply split day. 60s in the city. 70s and 80s in the valleys.

The warmth below the Pacific's surface holds the key to a potentially historic El Niño. And right now, that sub-surface water is toasty, as much as 13°F warmer than normal.

That's some ugly looking afternoon satellite imagery over the Bay Area. Skies tried to clear inland, but were overwhelmed by puffy cumulus clouds. And in S.F. and around the bay. Woof. The cold, chilly west wind won't relent.
