Must be raining in San Francisco, right? Nope. Dry air at the surface. No droplets reaching the ground. Some nice moisture laden cloud cover though and I am liking the "muggy" feel for a change of pace.

Oh well. It was going to rain in the Bay Area. And then it wasn't. So it goes with trying to predict how a decaying tropical system interacts with the "normal" weather environment.

Three official temperature records today. But it was hot. These past few days have been the hottest stretch for entire Bay Area for the summer. And the peak heat day fittingly happens on the last day of August.

The Pacific Decadal Oscillation just crashed to a record low. That means: - Colder water hugging California’s coast - Stronger fog & marine layer - Delayed rainy season - A tougher setup for fire & drought planning

Looking at this satellite imagery with no context, it would appear as if a major hurricane was about strike the East Coast. Weather models have come such a long way. We've know for several days now that Erin will curve back out to sea and not impact the US.

Hurricane Erin has impacts on California's weather as well, even if its not so obvious. Just how hot it gets and how far the heat spreads in the southwestern U.S. depends on the exact track of Erin. A tricky, but interesting connection!

How Hurricane Erin will impact California weather
Hurricane Erin will affect the positioning of the jet stream, which in turn will lock in a ridge of high pressure over the Southwest and help send extreme heat into parts of California.
