Tonight, the longest night, I joined with The People for Fairness Coalition for the annual Memorial Vigil For the Homeless, to honor those who died this year without the dignity of a home. In the Capital of the Richest Country in the world, it is unconscionable that scores of folks die unhoused.

One famous TV person went on air and said we should kill homeless people. Another reported the news. Can you guess which one got fired?

While Fox News host Brian Kilmeade suggests killing people who are homeless by lethal injection, Andrew Wassenich and the team at Miriam's Kitchen in Washington, DC have been feeding them.

Please consider taking this action. The new funding guidelines threaten existing programs and practices and require compliance to other directives unrelated to homelessness/housing (immigration, LGBTQ+, etc.) as a means to obtaining funding, also known as blackmail.

Words escape me.

The belief that poverty and homelessness are about "individual choices" didn't arise on its own. It was manufactured through decades of messaging designed to protect the policies and interests that create mass precarity. As this new poll shows, that propaganda campaign has been wildly successful.

We should not be arresting our unhoused neighbors. What we're witnessing on our streets is cruel, counterproductive, and unacceptable. Federal agents should not be patrolling our streets, terrifying our residents, and taking people away. The federal surge needs to end.

Happy Labor Day! If you’re unhoused and you have a hoarding disorder, the government confiscates your property under the guise of public health and safety. Can we not use the same reasoning to confiscate the property of the extreme hoarders of wealth?

I’d like to point out that for the amount of $ Americans spent on legalized gambling in 2024, we could house every last homeless person in the country at market rate for multiple years. Homelessness is not just a political failure, but a societal failure. #priorities.

You only withdraw from this if you don’t care about human rights and don’t want to be held to account. End of story.

They are sending soldiers into cities to prepare to intimidate people at the polls next year. They gerrymander because they can’t win on policy. They intimidate because even gerrymandering won’t work at this point.

If all of the millions and millions of dollars being spent on federal police and the National Guard in DC were spent on food, housing and community-based violence interruption, I bet you actual donuts to dollars you’d get more bang for your buck.

I did an interview today with Sky News on homelessness and encampment clearings. At one point the reporter says, ‘Well, this is a dangerous city —“ And I cut him off and I say, “It’s NOT A DANGEROUS CITY!!” And then go off on a bit of a rant.

For what he’s spending on the new ballroom at the White House (which scant few Americans will ever set foot in) we could house 4,255 people in DC for the entirety of his term WITH wraparound services.

Again: this is not about what this country can or can’t afford. It’s about priorities.

Why can they find places to sleep for national guard troops coming from other states to occupy DC, but not for homeless ppl. In Jan 2020, they used hotels for the guard. Will they do the same this time? If so, why is there $ for the army to stay in hotels but not homeless ppl?

For the daily cost of deploying the DC Guard, $420,000, 9 folks could move from homelessness to housing. This doesn't include the costs of the 4 states sending guard units to occupy DC. We have the money to solve homelessness, but we don't have the political will.

If you saw the news circus Thurs. night you saw these folks in Washington circle being told they had til Monday before they had to move. Friday morning, the Feds had them removed while most residents were getting breakfast. Fast, in 10 mins. They then cleared a few other small camps in an hour.

Trump's raids on DC's homeless encampments are starting tonight, although most of these people have nowhere else to go. “In DC, there are, right now, 30 open shelter beds for men and 30 open shelter beds for women… So for all intents and purposes, there’s nowhere else for people to go.”
