I miss email. Here's why I don't like Slack: 1. Conversations not organized by subject 2. Messages feel ephemeral, so everything feels urgent 3. Not easy to add new participants to an existing private conversation 4. Basically impossible to send someone a message without interrupting them

No Exceptions
Thereβs no acceptable level of runtime exceptions any of us should be putting up with.

They called it the Great Depression, I don't think it was that great. People are saying my depression will be much greater. Some say it could even be the greatest depression. I don't know, we'll see. But it could be.

It's so weird that Claude asks followup questions now and tries to keep a conversation going. at this point it's becoming a better conversationalist than some people I know.

I've been admiring Gleam from afar since the 1.0 release, finally got around to trying it via Advent of Code this week and wow is it ever different than anything I've ever worked with. Fun to feel like a complete noob again.

coded for like an hour in Go without running anything and everything just... worked? no "undefined method" no "wrong number of args" just make the red squigglies go away and the code runs on the first try? beginning to see the appeal here.

an interesting parallel between learning a new programming language and learning a new spoken language is you don't need to learn a whole lot just to get your point across

Mac 512k. to be fair it was a few years out of date when we got it the machine I really learned on was a Compaq Presario CDS 520, which came into my life on Christmas Day 1994. i learned QBASIC and HTML on that machine and became a nerd for life.

if you're doing Advent of Code to learn a new language here's some advice on using LLMs to help: 1. TURN OFF COPILOT. you will not retain anything without manually writing the code 2. Your questions to an LLM should be vague. "What's the idiomatic way in <lang> to <do thing>?"

For people who use React or other frontend frameworks with Rails or other fullstack tools, what's your preference: 1. Totally separate repos 2. Same repo, but frontend is built and deployed separately 3. Frontend code is built by Rails (e.g. using vite-rails) and mounted in a Rails view

so now that we all love owning our own data can we talk about how the adoption of Discord as the go-to solution for communities has been an absolute disaster for information sharing? it's time to bring back forums.

Working on a Ruby version of
cva.style
for organizing Tailwind classes on Phlex/ViewComponent components. i'll be open-sourcing this soon when I'm happy with the API and have some tests written. (button styles are from
@shadcn.com
, which was the impetus for writing this)
