When I was elected to the Supreme Court in 2018, I brought with me three decades of experience as a civil rights attorney and a deep belief that the Court must protect the rights and freedoms of every North Carolinian. This belief still drives me today.

This is not who we are as a nation, and it’s not who we are as North Carolinians.

Before he passed, my brother served 10 years in the Army. I saw firsthand his dedication to serving his country and the promise that it was founded on – that all are created equal.

This weekend I spoke to a room of fired up Democrats in Wilkes County! I continue to be inspired by the stories from dedicated individuals across the state who are working hard to organize their communities, show up for each other, and harness their political power.

When I served in the majority on the North Carolina Supreme Court, the court held that extreme partisan gerrymandering violated the state constitution. That ruling was rooted in the principle that voters should choose their representatives—not the other way around.

On this day every year, alongside the mourning, I also remember the unity, strength, and heroism of ordinary Americans on September 11, 2001. I was working just blocks from the White House that morning as the nation watched the events unfold with disbelief and terror.

Last night, I had a moment to thank US Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson for the inspiring example she sets for all of us who care about justice. She told an illuminating story of how she learned while at Harvard Law School that, in the words of Toni Morrison, 🧵
